A CRITICAL EVALUATION OF LENDING CONSIDERATION OF NIGERIAN DEPOSIT BANKS

ABSTRACT

This work titled “A critical evaluation of lending consideration of Nigeria Deposit Banks” intended looking into the operation of Nigeria Banks. The objectives was to find out if Nigerian Deposit Banks are orthodox and rigid in their lending considerations; to discover whether or not these banks placed more emphasis on collateral and to find out if the veracity of the banks statement that short term and cash reserve requirement of the bank is either imposed by itself or externally imposed by the government, often varies the volume of loan accommodation of the bank for a particular period To achieve our objective, we postulated hypothesis which are: Nigerian Deposit Banks are not orthodox and rigid in their lending consideration, Nigerian Deposit Banks do not place too much emphasis on collateral securities. In other to derive result for our postulated hypothesis, we drew into both empirical and desk research. Bank executives and credit officers working in the credit department of the various banks were interviewed. Government credit guidance and bank annual report were another source of our information including newspapers and journals.
